Chandigarh: The Punjab Congress today strongly condemned undue benefits being showered upon the buses of the transport companies of the ruling Badal family at the cost of the state transport buses forcing the employees to stage protest demonstrations. Extending full support to the agitation by the Jalandhar roadways employees on this issue, party General Secretary Rajanbir Singh said the buses of the Badal transport companies had been making huge profits at the cost of the Punjab Roadways and the PRTC buses which were running in huge loasses. “How come that the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal does not apply the same management techniques to the Punjab Roadways and the PRTC which have turned sick over the years whereas Badal transport fleet has been expanding unlike any other private transport company in the state? Does Sukhbir wants to privatise the entire government”, he asked.
He said this was not for the first time that the government transport employees had resorted to agitation against the Badal buses. He recalled in a blatant show of force during the election campaign, the staff of a Badal transport bus had forced passengers from a roadways bus near Jalandhar to board their bus which did not have any passengers. He said it was too well known a fact that the buses of the Badal company had been allocated prime timings at the cost of the state transport buses. He said Sukhbir had taken over even small transport companies. He said the luxury buses of the Badal family which had now established monopoly over certain routs by forcing out other companies or taking over the same were charging exorbitant fares from the people and they had to pay as there was no alternative. He said this amounted to open loot of the people in the state. He said the luxury buses playing from different destinations to the Delhi international airport was an example in this regard. Rajanbir said the Badals had not only taken over almost all the lucrative bus routes in the state but also profit making dhabas and even Sukhbir himself had admitted that this was the impression among the people in the state. He called upon the BJP, the alliance partner of the Akali Dal, to shed its timidity and take a bold stand against such highhandedness of Sukhbir Badal and support the agitation by the Punjab roadways employees.
