Sukhbir can’t be investigator and the judge on Majithia: Bajwa

Chandigarh: The Punjab Congress President, Mr. Partap Singh Bajwa, today rejected the clean chit given by the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal, to his brother-in-law and the Revenue Minister, Bikram Singh Majithia, in the case of his alleged association with the multi-crore smuggling racket in the state saying he himself could not be the investigator, prosecutor and the judge combined into one. Moreover, there could not be two standards in the same case. In a statement, Mr. Bajwa said the Deputy Chief Minister acquitted his brother-in-law of all the allegations saying it was a media hype while the fact of the matter was that his name to the racket had been linked by cop turned smuggler Jagdish Bhola presently under detention after which he was barred from talking to the media while being produced in the court. The PPCC chief said it was strange that the Tourism Minister, Mr. Sarwan Singh Phillaur, had to submit his resignation as the name of his son Damanvir Singh cropped up in the state case although nothing had been established so far against him as the investigation had been going on. Damanvir had so far managed to ignore the summons by not appearing before the enforcement directorate doing the investigation. Me. Bajwa said no investigation had been done by any agency against Mr. Majithia and this precisely was the reason that he had been demanding probe by the CBI in this multicore case. He said the outright exoneration of the ruling party politicians in this racket by Mr. Badal saying there was no political patronage to the smuggling was just ridiculous and nothing short of a joke. He said the scale of the racket unearthed with the arrest of Bhola had been estimated at about Rs. 6000 crore which also had international links. He reminded Mr. Sukhbir Badal that even his alliance partner, the Bharatiya Janata Party, had hinted at the involvement of the big fish in this racket with clear hints. It was not just the propaganda from the opposition or the media hype. This had emerged as the most critical issue in the run up to the election campaign for the recent Lok Sabha elections. He reiterated that the investigation in this case should be handed over to the CBI. Now the Deputy Chief Minister could not take refuge in the allegation that the CBI was just a Congress Bureau of Investigation as it was the NDA government in power at the centrer in which the Akali Dal was the partner, he added. Bajwa concerned over fate of abducted Punjabi workers in Iraq The Punjab Congress President, Mr Partap Singh Bajwa, today expressed grave concern over the continued uncertainty about the fate of the 40 Indian workers, majority of them from this state, kidnapped by the insurgents from Mosul town in Iraq. In a statement, he said the Union government had yesterday assured of all the possible steps to rescue them. However, what was the cause of worry was that no contact had been established with the workers or their abductors so far. He urged the government to intensify efforts to ensure safety of their workers and make arrangements for their return after negotiating their freedom. He said these workers from this region and the nurses from Kerala had gone there in search of greener pastures but would have never imagined that they would be trapped in such a situation. He said the families of these workers were worried as they were in complete darkness after they lost contact with their near and dear ones. Mr. Bajwa said the situation was turning dangerously alarming with each passing day and the government must act swiftly to bring them back safely. The priority should be given to establishing contact with them as the first step towards their rescue, he added.
